I had the privilege to work with Frank Boal for two years at FOX 4. There are always a few personalities that make a newsroom tick, and Frank was one of them. Today is his last day after 28 years at the station.
My favorite memory of working with Frank is from the weekend that the seventh Harry Potter book was released.
This particular Sunday I had my nose glued to the brand new HP (let's clarify that working weekends in TV news is, at times, painfully slow). I was about 100 pages from the end. On a roll. Then I hear shouting from the assignment desk about 15 feet away...
"Mathews, you reading Harry Potter? What book are you on?"
"Deathly Hallows, Frankie."
"Don't you f**kin' say a f**kin' word about it! I'm on page 175!"
[Frank exits newsroom back to the sports pod]
I don't know why, but thinking about that story always makes me laugh.
