World Cup Draws

The 2010 World Cup draws were last Friday, and the U.S. made out pretty well!

I really wish that I had been able to go party with other Kansas City fans at 810 Zone... but it was at 11 a.m. and I had to get my work on. :(

Pretty cool video from the Wizards highlighting the party, though!

Divorce Fantasy Draft Rules

On Chris & Cowboy on 610 Sports today, "Cowboy" Cory Anderson revealed that he and his ex-wife had a "Fantasy Draft" for their kitchen items when they got divorced.

It's genius.

So Standefer and I took this to the next level and created some rules for a Household Items Fantasy Draft:

1) Each person must have a team name (suggestions: "Marriage Schmarriage," "You F**k Like a Bag of Concrete," "I Slept With Your Maid of Honor," "I Married You For Your Money and Now I Have Half," and "You're Not the Father").

2) You only get a certain number of spots for each item (i.e. 2 pieces of furniture, 4 dishware/utensils, 3 "utility" items).

3) You may celebrate and/or belittle good/bad picks.

4) Couple must trade off turns. Snake Draft rules only apply to Polygamists. No Auction Drafts unless you make equal amounts of money annually and remember how much everything cost.

Anything we missed?

Oh - and ninth happy anniversary, Shane!

Independence Day Weekend

This was probably the best Independence Day weekend I've had in years. Saturday Jake and I spent the entire day at Lake Perry with his family and Diane's (pregnant sister-in-law) family.

The private marina at Lake Perry is amazing. It's like a dorm for adults with boats. Everyone is always visiting each other's slips and sharing food. There's also a running water balloon fight.

Anyway, the afternoon was beautiful. It turned cold toward the evening so we bundled up and watched the Perry fireworks display anchored in a cove.

I also got to feel Baby Yadrich move for the first time inside Diane's tummy. I'm not a baby person, but when pregnancy hits so close to home, it's actually a very cool thing. Three weeks until delivery.

Sunday we went to the Royals vs. White Sox game and tailgated with my Uncles Mike and Dan and their families. The Royals won (weird) and I got to see Soria pitch!

The rest of my pics are on my Flickr page and the photo archive. I didn't take many, because I was too busy enjoying myself!

My favorite Frank Boal moment

I had the privilege to work with Frank Boal for two years at FOX 4. There are always a few personalities that make a newsroom tick, and Frank was one of them. Today is his last day after 28 years at the station.

My favorite memory of working with Frank is from the weekend that the seventh Harry Potter book was released.

This particular Sunday I had my nose glued to the brand new HP (let's clarify that working weekends in TV news is, at times, painfully slow). I was about 100 pages from the end. On a roll. Then I hear shouting from the assignment desk about 15 feet away...

"Mathews, you reading Harry Potter? What book are you on?"

"Deathly Hallows, Frankie."

"Don't you f**kin' say a f**kin' word about it! I'm on page 175!"

[Frank exits newsroom back to the sports pod]

I don't know why, but thinking about that story always makes me laugh.
